No evidence yet for hadronic TeV gamma-ray emission from SNR RX J1713-3946

چکیده
Recent TeV-scale γ-ray observations with the CANGAROO II telescope have led to the claim that the multi-band spectrum of RX J1713.7-3946 cannot be explained as the composite of a synchrotron and an inverse Compton component emitted by a population of relativistic electrons. It was argued that the spectrum of the high-energy emission is a good match to that predicted by pion decay, thus providing observational evidence that protons are accelerated in SNR to at least TeV energies. In this Letter we discuss the multi-band spectrum of RX J1713.7-3946 under the constraint that the GeV-scale emission observed from the closely associated EGRET source 3EG J1714-3857 is either associated with the SNR or an upper limit to the gammaray emission of the SNR. We find that the observed TeV-scale γ-ray emission of RX J1713.7-3946 cannot be explained by a pion decay component.

متن کاملEvidence for TeV gamma - ray emission from the shell type SNR RX J 1713 . 7 − 3946
We report the results of TeV gamma-ray observations of the shell type SNR RX J1713.7−3946 (G347.3−0.5). The discovery of strong non-thermal X-ray emission from the northwest part of the remnant strongly suggests the existence of electrons with energies up to ∼ 100 TeV in the remnant, making the SNR a good candidate TeV gamma-ray source. We observed RX J1713.7−3946 from May to August 1998 with t...
متن کاملThe multi - band nonthermal emission from the supernova remnant RX J 1713 . 7 - 3946
Nonthermal X-rays and very high-energy (VHE) γ-rays have been detected from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946, and especially the recent observations with the Suzaku satellite clearly reveal a spectral cutoff in the X-ray spectrum, which directly relates to the cutoff of the energy spectrum of the parent electrons. However, whether the origin of the VHE γ-rays from the SNR is hadronic...
متن کاملPrimary particle acceleration above 100 TeV in the shell - type Supernova Remnant RX J 1713 . 7 − 3946 with deep H . E . S . S . observations
Aims. We present deep H.E.S.S. observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7−3946. Combining data of three years – from 2003 to 2005 – we obtain significantly increased statistics and energy coverage as compared to earlier 2003 & 2004 results. Methods. The data are analysed separately for the different years. Results. Very good agreement of the gamma-ray morphology and the differential...
متن کاملTeV Gamma Rays from Synchrotron X-ray SNR
Recent detections of both synchrotron X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emissions from several supernova remnants (SNR) are very exciting. SNR has been widely believed an unique candidate of cosmic-ray origin since the beginning of cosmic-ray physics, nevertheless little observational evidences have been reported so far. These detections are expected to be a clue of not only the galactic cosmicray origin...
